Lord of the Rings Literature Study
Follow Frodo and the Fellowship through this action-packed literary adventure! This is a semester-long high school course in which students will read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as several related texts while learning to analyze literature.
Follow Frodo and the Fellowship through this action-packed literary adventure! This is a semester-long high school course in which students will read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as several related texts while learning to analyze literature. Weekly webinars are 50 minutes long. Recordings are available for students who must miss a session.
Lessons include:
- Tolkien’s influences, such as Beowulf, Arthurian Romance, etc.
- Characterization
- The hero’s journey
- Fantasy genre
- Poetry and song
- Overview of literary analysis terms and techniques
Learning activities include regular writing to communicate ideas via the discussion forum, videos and multimedia materials to support learning, use of web 2.0 tools to illustrate new concepts, and weekly participation in live webinars.

- The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
